THOUGHTS ON THE PROBLEM OF ASPHALT BASE COURSES UNDER GUSSASPHALT SURFACINGS

THE EVENNESS AND RESISTANCE TO DEFORMATION REQUIRED OF BASECOURSES IS BEST ACHIEVED BY MEANS OF A DENSE MIXTURE OBTAINED BY THE USE OF A LARGE QUANTITY OF BROKEN AGGREGATE AND BY GOOD COMPACTION. GIVEN THAT GUSSASPHALT IS VERY PRONE TO BLISTERING, THE EFFECT OF VARIOUSLY DENSE BASECOURSES ON THE FORMATION OR INHIBITION OF BLISTERS IS DISCUSSED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE REGARDING THE OPTIMUM VOIDS CONTENT OF BASECOURSE MIXTURES. /TRRL/
