BINDERS FOR BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

TO IMPROVE THE RESISTANCE TO CRACKING AND SHEARING STRENGTH OF ROAD SURFACINGS WITHIN SERVICE TEMPERATURE RANGE, POLYMERS CAN BE ADDED TO BITUMEN. THE POLYMERS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: REGULAR SPATIAL STRUCTURE, GOOD SOLUBILITY IN THE CONSTITUENTS OF BITUMEN, AND GOOD ELASTICITY. TESTS HAVE SHOWN THAT DIVINYL- STYROLENE WAS MOST SUITABLE; IT CAN BE ADDED TO BITUMEN IN THE FORM OF A SOLUTION IN ORGANIC SOLVENTS, OR MECHANICALLY. THE FIRST METHOD GIVES A BETTER MECHANICAL PERFORMANCE. THE PROPORTION ADDED IS 2 PERCENT OF THE WEIGHT OF THE BITUMEN. QUANTITATIVE DATA ARE GIVEN ON THE IMPROVEMENT IN STANDARD PARAMETERS AND RHEOLOGICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BINDER. ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WAS MANUFACTURED WITH POLYMER-BITUMEN AND A STUDY MADE OF ITS MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. RESULTS SHOW IMPROVED COMPACTIBILITY AND MARKED REDUTION IN CRACKING. /TRRL/
