CONTINUOUSLY REINFORCED CONCRETE PAVEMENT

NINE AND FORTY-FIVE HUNDREDTHS MILES OF CONTINUOSLY REINFORCED, ANCHORED CONCRETE PAVEMENT WERE OBSERVED AND MEASURED FOR MOVEMENT OF THE PAVEMENT ENDS, AND JOINTS 126'-6" AND 320'-6" FROM THE END. CRACKS AND JOINTS WERE MEASURED FOR THE AMOUNT OF OPENING. SIX TEST SECTIONS WERE SURVEYED AND CRACKS WERE MEASURED FOR FREQUENCY. THIS EVALUATION OF THE CONCRETE PAVEMENT WAS CONTINUED FOR SIX YEARS, AND THE FOLLOWING CONCLUSIONS WERE DRAWN: (1) THE PERCENTAGE OF STEEL WAS ADEQUATE TO HOLD THE CRACK TOGETHER TIGHTLY. (2) THE ANCHORAGE SYSTEM WAS MORE THAN ADEQUATE TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE END MOVEMENT OF THE PAVEMENT. (3) AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY, USING A HELICOPTER, WAS COMPETITIVE WITH A GROUND SURVEY FOR MAPPING PAVEMENT CRACKING AND CAN PRODUCE GOOD RESULTS. /AUTHOR/
