MICROSCOPIC EXAMINATION OF THE EFFECT OF OXIDATION ON THE MICROSTRUCTURE OF PAVING ASPHALTS

ASPHALTS HAVING A MICROSTRUCTURE OF SMALL MICELLAR CLUSTERS (ABOUT 0.005 MM) WERE FOUND TO BE HIGHLY RESISTANT TO OXIDATION WHILE THOSE HAVING LARGE MICELLAR CLUSTERS (ABOUT 0.050MM) SHOWED A GREATLY INCREASED OXIDATION SUSCEPTIBILITY. ETCHING OF THE TWO ASPHALTS WITH ETHYL ETHER LEADS TO TOTAL DESTRUCTION OF THE SMALL MICROSTRUCTURE AND ONLY PARTIAL DESTRUCTION OF THE LARGE MICROSTRUCTURE. THIS WOULD SUGGEST THAT THE SMALL MICROSTRUCTURE CONTAINS RELATIVELY LITTLE ASPHALTENE MATERIALS WHILE THE LARGE MICROSTRUCTURE CONTAINS CONSIDERABLY MORE.
