FINGERPRINTING OF HIGHWAY ASPHALTS WITH DISCUSSION

THIS PAPER IS A SUMMARY REPORT ON TWO INTERRELATED PROJECTS CARRIED OUT UNDER THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE FEDERAL HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION WITH THE OBJECTIVE OF DEVELOPING A SYSTEM FOR RECORDING AND CROSS-REFERENCING RESULTS FROM RESEARCH ON HIGHWAY ASPHALTS IN SUCH A FORM THAT PAST RESEARCH CAN BE CATALOGED AND MADE AVAILABLE FOR MONITORING NEW RESEARCH PROJECTS. THE WORK PERFORMED IN THE PRESENT STUDY WAS ORGANIZED TO ACCOMPLISH THE STATED OBJECTIVE BY PERFORMING THREE INDIVIDUAL TASKS WHICH CONSISTED OF: (1) SETTING UP A DATA BANK OF ALL CURRENTLY AVAILABLE INFORMATION; (2) CORRELATING THE BEHAVIOR OF ASPHALTS WITH THEIR CHARACTERISTIC PROPERTIES; AND (3) SELECTING THREE SETS OF PARAMETERS, LABELED "IDENTITY PARAMETERS," "FINGER- PRINTS" AND "BEHAVIOR PARAMETERS". THE MEANING OF THE THREE SETS OF PARAMETERS, THEIR DERIVATION AND UTILITY ARE DESCRIBED AND SUPPORTED BY SUBSTANTIATING EXPERIMENTAL DATA. A DISCUSSION IS INCLUDED WHICH DEALS WITH VARIOUS QUESTIONS CONCERNING THIS STUDY. /AUTHOR/
