BEHAVIOR OF FULL-DEPTH BITUMINOUS PAVEMENTS UNDER HEAVY AIRCRAFT LOADINGS WITH DISCUSSION

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE TO: (1) COMPARE THE PERFORMANCE OF ASPHALT-STABLIZED BASE AND SUBBASE MATERIALS WITH THAT OF SIMILAR UNBOUND GRANULAR MATERIALS AND (2) DETERMINE THE DIFFERENCE IN PERFORMANCE BETWEEN BITUMINOUS BASE COURSES CONSTRUCTED OF HIGH QUALITY CRUSHED AGGREGATE AND LOWER QUALITY UNCRUSHED MATERIALS. FROM THE RESULTS OF TESTS, PAVEMENT PERFORMANCE OF THE BITUMINOUS-STABILIZED MATERIAL WAS IN ALL CASES BETTER THAN CONVENTIONAL PAVEMENTS OF THE SAME THICKNESS WHERE GRANULAR UNBOUND BASE AND SUBBASE MATERIALS WERE USED. ALSO, THE QUALITY OF THE AGGREGATE USED IN THE PAVEMENT STRUCTURE HAD A GREAT INFLUENCE ON THE LOADCARRYING CAPABILITY OF THE PAVEMENT AND IT WAS SHOWN THAT WHERE HIGH QUALITY MATERIALS ARE USED, THICKNESS REDUCTIONS CAN BE MADE. THE TEST DATA SHOW THAT EQUAL PERFORMANCE CAN BE OBTAINED ON THINNER PAVEMENT STRUCTURES WHERE MINIMUM ALLOWABLE QUALITY SUBBASE MATERIAL IS REPLACED BY A HIGHER QUALITY MATERIAL. THIS STUDY WAS PLANNED AS A PILOT TO DETERMINE THE VALIDITY OF THE CONCEPT BY WHICH A BITUMINOUS BASE IS EQUAL TO MORE THAN ITS THICKNESS OF GRANULAR UNBOUND BASE MATERIAL. THE RESULTS DO INDICATE VALIDITY OF THE CONCEPT; HOWEVER, MUCH MORE WORK IS NEEDED TO DEVELOP DESIGN CRITERIA TREATING A WIDE RANGE IN QUALITY OF MATERIALS. A DISCUSSION IS INCLUDED WHICH DEALS WITH VARIOUS QUESTIONS ARISING FROM THIS STUDY.
