DESIGN METHOD FOR GAP-GRADED ASPHALTIC MIXES
AN INVESTIGATION WAS MADE INTO SOME OF THE FACTORS AFFECTING THE PERFORMANCE OF MIXES OF THE TYPE DESCRIBED IN "BRITISH STANDARD 594: ROLLED ASPHALT (HOT PROCESS)." OF THE VARIOUS FACTORS STUDIED, THE SAND PROPERTIES (AS MEASURED BY THE DRY VISCOSITY TEST), THE STONE CONTENT, AND THE BINDER CONTENT WERE SHOWN TO HAVE THE GREATEST EFFECT ON THE STABILITY OF A GAP-GRADED ASPHALT. BASED ON THESE FINDINGS, A TENTATIVE MIX DESIGN METHOD IS PROPOSED. THIS METHOD IS EQUALLY VALID FOR BOTH WEARING COURSES AND BASE (OR BINDER) COURSES, ALTHOUGH THE VALUES OF MARSHALL STIFFNESS PROPOSED RELATE ONLY TO WEARING COURSE MIXES. /AUTHOR/
