THE DYNAMIC STIFFNESS OF BITUMINOUS ROAD MATERIALS
THE OBJECT OF THIS RESEARCH WAS TO DETERMINE IF BITUMINOUS MATERIALS EXHIBIT STRESS-DEPENDANCE. UNCONFINED SINUSOIDAL LOADING COMPRESSION-TENSION TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON CYLINDRICAL SPECIMENS OF WEARING COURSE AND BASE COURSE ASPHALTS. STIFFNESS-STRESS RELATIONSHIPS, PHASE LAG, POISSON'S RATIO, AND AIR VOIDS EFFECT WERE DETERMINED. THE RESULTS SHOWED THE DYNAMIC STIFFNESS MODULUS TO BE STRESS- DEPENDENT. HOWEVER, IT IS NOTED THAT THIS NON-LINEAR EFFECT IS SMALL IN COMPARISON WITH TEMPERATURE-INDUCED STIFFNESS CHANGES. IS SMALL IN COMPARISON WITH TEMPERATURE-INDUCED STIFFNESS
