RUBBERIZED ASPHALT PAVEMENT

RUBBERIZING ASPHALT PAVEMENTS BY APPLICATION OF SMALL AMOUNTS OF RUBBER AFTER FINAL COMPACTION OF THE ASPHALT WAS REPORTED AT A RECENT MEETING IN SALT LAKE CITY. A HIGH- MOLECULAR COPOLYMER CALLED SOLPRENE GEO FORMS THE RUBBER BASE OF THE SPRAYED MATERIAL, WHICH GOES UNDER THE NAME PETROSET AT. THE COPOLYMER HAS A TENSILE STRENGTH 20 TIMES THAT NORMALLY ATTAINED ON RUBBER WITHOUT VULCANIZATION. THIS IS PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT, SINCE VULCANIZED RUBBER IS INSOLUBLE IN ASPHALT. THE BENEFITS SAID TO BE ASSOCIATED WITH THE NEW MATERIAL ARE LONGER PAVEMENT LIFE; VIRTUAL SEALING AGAINST WATER AND AIR PERMEATION; CONSTRUCTION UNATTENDED BY PROBLEMS OF MIXING, LAYING, AND COMPACTION; RETENTION OF NORMAL MIX TIMES IN THE PUG MILL; OBVIATION OF THE NEED FOR ASPHALT SUPPLIERS TO ADD RUBBER TO STORAGE TANKS; AND EASE OF APPLICATION. PETROSET AT SHOULD BE APPLIED TO COMPLETELY COLD COMPACTED PAVEMENT BEFORE IT IS OPENED TO TRAFFIC, AND THE PAVEMENT SHOULD BE DRY FOR AT LEAST TWO DAYS PRIOR TO TREATMENT TO ASSURE THAT THE VOIDS ARE NOT FILLED WITH WATER. CONTROLLED FIELD TESTS HAVE BEEN CONDUCTED IN CALIFORNIA, OKLAHOMA, SOUTH CAROLINA, AND MISSOURI.
