MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF BITUMEN IN RELATION TO ROAD PERFORMANCE
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE FLOW AND FRACTURE OF BITUMENS WAS INVESTIGATED, AND THE CONDITIONS ARISING DURING THE APPLICATION OF A DENSE ASPHALT MIX AND THE PERFORMANCE IN SERVICE OF VARIOUS ASPHALT SURFACINGS WERE CONSIDERED. METHODS OF MEASURING THESE PROPERTIES ARE DESCRIBED. WITH THE AID OF RESULTS OBTAINED BY METHODS DEVISED FOR THE DIRECT MEASUREMENT OF BITUMEN PROPERTIES AT SHORT AND LONG TIMES OF LOADING, SUITABLE FOR ALL KINDS OF BINDERS, OR USING RESULTS DEDUCED BY MEANS OF NOMOGRAPHS, IT SHOULD BE POSSIBLE TO DRAFT BITUMEN SPECIFICATIONS COVERING THEIR MECHANICAL PROPERTIES IN ENGINEERING TERMS, WHICH WILL BE SIGNIFICANT FROM THE POINT OF VIEW OF ROAD PERFORMANCE OVER THE WHOLE RANGE OF CONDITIONS LIKELY TO BE EXPERIENCED IN PRACTICE. /TRRL/
