MOVING LOAD ON VISCOELASTIC LAYERED SYSTEMS PHASE II

A METHOD OF ANALYSIS IS PRESENTED FOR THE INVESTIGATION OF THE DEVELOPED STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS IN A LAYERED PAVEMENT STRUCTURE. THE STRUCTURE IS REPRESENTED BY A MATHEMATICAL MODEL THAT IS COMPOSED OF THREE LAYERS. EACH LAYER IS ASSUMED TO BE LINEARLY ELASTIC OR VISCOELASTIC, ISOTROPIC, HOMOGENEOUS AND IMCOMPRESSIBLE, WITH STRESS STRAIN RELATIONS EXPRESSED IN HEREDITARY INTEGRAL FORM. THE RESPONSE OF THE STRUCTURE TO UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED NORMAL LOADS IS DETERMINED BY USING SEVERAL LAYERED SYSTEMS WITH A VARIETY OF MECHANICAL PROPERTIES. IN THIS INVESTIGATION THREE DIFFERENT LOAD BOUNDARY CONDITIONS ARE CONSIDERED: (1) A STATIONARY LOAD IS APPLIED AND MAINTAINED AT THE SAME REGION ON THE SURFACE FOR AN INFINITE PERIOD OF TIME, (2) A REPEATED LOAD IS APPLIED WITH A SPECIFIED FREQUENCY TO THE SAME AREA ON THE SURFACE OF THE PAVEMENT, AND (3) THE LOAD IS MADE TO TRAVEL AT A CONSTANT VELOCITY ALONG A STRAIGHT PATH ON THE SURFACE OF THE SYSTEM. THE RESPONSE OF THE STRUCTURE IN A GIVEN TRAFFIC AND CLIMATIC ENVIRONMENT IS CALCULATED IN TERMS OF THE DEVELOPED STRESSES AND DISPLACEMENTS. THE INFLUENCES OF THE MECHANICAL PROPERTIES OF THE MATERIALS IN THE LAYERS, THE PERIOD AND DURATION OF THE APPLIED LOADING, THE SPATIAL LOCATION OF THE POINT OF INTEREST, THE RADIUS OF THE LOADED AREA AND THE THICKNESS OF THE LAYERS ON THE RESPONSE OF THE STRUCTURE ARE DETERMINED. THE RESULTS INDICATE THAT, THE DEVELOPED MATHEMATICAL MODEL CAN BE UTILIZED, AS A FIRST APPROXIMATION, TO SIMULATE THE OBSERVED MECHANICAL RESPONSES OF A PAVEMENT STRUCTURE IN A GIVEN TRAFFIC AND CLIMATIC ENVIRONMENT. THE TECHNIQUE CAN THEREFORE BE USED TO DEVELOP THE MATHEMATICAL FRAMEWORK FOR A RATIONAL METHOD OF DESIGN OF PAVEMENT STRUCTURES. /AUTHOR/
