DETERMINING THE BINDER REQUIREMENTS OF FILLERS
THE INFLUENCE OF THE FILLER IN A BITUMINOUS MIX DEPENDS ON THE PARTICLE SIZE DISTRIBUTION AND ON SHAPE. SEVERAL METHODS HAVE BEEN DEVELOPED FOR DETERMINING THE RESULTS OF THESE TWO FACTORS; THE DETERMINATION OF THE BITUMEN CONTENT NEEDED TO CONVERT THE FILLER TO A MASTIC HAS BEEN FOUND TO BE THE BEST. THE METHOD HAS HOWEVER A FAIRLY WIDE DISPERSION, AS HAS BEEN FOUND IN COMPARATIVE TESTS IN DIFFERENT LABORATORIES. A STUDY WAS THEREFORE CARRIED OUT INTO THE USE OF THE METHOD KNOWN IN SOIL MECHANICS FOR THE DETERMINATION OF WATER ABSORPTION USING THE ENSLIN MACHINE. A LARGE QUANTITY OF DATA SHOWED THAT THERE IS A RECIPROCAL RELATION BETWEEN THE MASTIC LIMIT AND THE WATER ABSORPTION. SINCE THE ENSLIN FIGURE REPRESENTS A PURE MEASUREMENT AND IS NOT LIABLE TO ANY SUBJECTIVE INFLUENCES, IT WOULD LEAD TO TRUE ASSESSMENT OF THE FILLER WITH A PRECISELY DEFINED TEST ACCURACY. /FG-RRL/
