EXPERIMENTAL INSTALLATION OF BITUMINOUS MEMBRANES FOR FROST PROTECTION OF ROADS IN BAVARIA

BITUMEN MEMBRANES ARE USED IN THE USA AS A PROTECTION AGAINST THE CAPILLARY RISE OF WATER AND FOR THE SEALING OF FILLS. A REPORT IS GIVEN OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND FIRST MEASUREMENTS CARRIED OUT ON A TEST SECTION OF THE B 2, IN WHICH THE MATERIAL OF THE BASE, WHICH IS NOT PROTECTED FROM FROST, IS COVERED ON ALL SIDES BY A SPRAYED MEMBRANE OF OXYDATED BITUMEN. MEASUREMENTS OF FROST PENETRATION IN THE WINTER OF 1968/1969 SHOWED CLEARLY THAT THE BITUMINOUS LAYER HAS A THERMAL INSULATING EFFECT. /TRRL/
