BITUMINOUS MIXTURES: BINDER FATIGUE

THE RESISTANCE OF BITUMEN TO FATIGUE WAS STUDIED BY APPLYING REPEATED SHEAR STRESSES TO A THIN BITUMEN LAYER. THE TESTS WERE CARRIED OUT ON A LARGE NUMBER OF DIFFERENT TYPES OF BITUMEN, AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND FREQUENCIES WHILE THE STRESS AMPLITUDE REMAINED CONSTANT. FOR A GIVEN TEMPERATURE AND FREQUENCY, THE LOGARITHM OF THE LIFE TIME OF BITUMEN EXPRESSED IN THE NUMBER OF CYCLES IS A DECREASING FUNCTION OF THE LOGARITHM OF RELATIVE DEFORMATION. THE FATIGUE STRENGTH OF BITUMENS AT VARIOUS TEMPERATURES AND FREQUENCIES IS DESCRIBED BY MEANS OF THE COMPLEX MODULUS AND PENETRATION INDEX OF THE BITUMEN. IT IS THEREFORE POSSIBLE TO QUICKLY DETERMINE THE LIFE TIME OF BITUMEN WITHOUT USING LENGTHY FATIGUE TESTS. IN TERMS OF ENERGY, THE LIFE TIME OF BITUMEN IS A FUNCTION OF THE TOTAL ENERGY DISSIPATED DURING THE FATIGUE TEST. /TRRL/
