INFLUENCE OF FLANGE WIDTH OF THE SHEAR BEHAVIOR OF REINFORCCED CONCRETE T BEAMS

TESTS ON THE SHEAR RESISTANCE OF T BEAMS WITH VARYING FLANGE WIDTHS ARE REPORTED. THE INFLUENCE OF TWO MAIN PARAMETERS, NAMELY THE LONGITUDINAL REINFORCEMENT AND WEB STEEL, WAS INVESTIGATED. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT THE SHEAR RESISTANCCE OF T BEAMS IS SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED BY THE FLANGE WIDTH, THE PERCENTAGE OF TENSION STEEL AND THE AMOUNT OF WEB REINFORCEMENT. HOWEVER, IT APPEARS THAT WITH CONVENTIONAL DETAILING OF WEB STEEL, THE FULL SHEAR CARRYING CAPACITY OF THE SLAB IS NOT MOBILIZED DUE PARTICULARLY TO THE INSTABILITY OF THE FLANGE OUTSTANDS AND THE WEAKNESS OF THE WEB-FLANGE INTERFACE. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT TO COMPARE RECTANGULAR AND T BEAMS, BEAMS OF THE SAME WEB WIDTH AND P/PB RATIO SHOULD BE CONSIDERED, AND ON THIS BASIS IT IS SHOWN THAT THE SHEAR RESISTANCE OF T BEAMS CAN BE MORE THAN DOUBLED COMPARED WITH THAT OF RECTANGULAR BEAMS. /TRRL/
