PREDICTION OF SUBJECTIVE RESPONSE TO ROAD ROUGHNESS USING THE GM-MDSH RAPID TRAVEL PROFILOMETER

USING ROAD PROFILE TO PREDICT THE WAY IN WHICH HUMAN BEINGS WILL RATE THE RIDEABILITY OF A ROAD SURFACE REQUIRES BOTH ACCURATE PROFILES AND CORRECT PSYCHOPHYSICAL SCALING. THE GM-MDSH RAPID TRAVEL PROFILOMETER (RTP) IS A SIGNIFICANT ADVANCE IN ACHIEVING ACCURATE PROFILES. HOWEVER, PSYCHOPHYSICAL SCALING REMAINS RELATIVELY UNDEVELOPED AND AS SUCH, IS A BARRIER TO VALID RIDE PREDICATION BY PROFILES OR ANY OTHER MEANS. THE PURPOSE IS TO SHOW THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN ROFILE PARAMETERS, ROUGHOMETER VALUES, AND SUBJECTIVE RESPONSE. A COLLATERAL FINDING IS THAT THE VARIETY OF METHODS USED TO MEASURE HUMAN SUBJECTIVE RESPONSE TO RIDE, OR SERVICEABILITY, RESULT IN MATHEMATICALLY DIFFERENT PSYCHOPHYSICAL FORMULAS. IN SHORT, THE PSYCHOPHYSICAL FUNCTION OBTAINED DEPENDS ON THE ASSUMPTIONS OF THE SCALING PROCEDURE. /AUTHOR/
