IMPROVING THE SEISMIC SAFETY OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGES

THIS PAPER SUGGESTS POSSIBLE DESIGNS TO IMPROVE THE SAFETY OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGES IN AREAS WHERE EARTHQUAKES ARE LIABLE TO OCCUR. THE FOLLOWING PROPOSALS ARE MADE: (1) THE SUPERSTRUCTURE SHOULD HAVE A CONTINUOUS DECK BETWEEN ABUTMENTS OR GROUP PIERS AND BE ALLOWED TO FLOAT ON SLIDING BEARINGS, SLENDER OR PENDULUM COLUMNS; (2) THE AMOUNT OF DISPLACEMENT SHOULD BE LIMITED DEPENDING ON THE PROBABLE MAGNITUDE OF EARTHQUAKE IN THE REGION; AND (3) THE DESIGN LOAD OF COLUMNS SHOULD BE INCREASED AND THE TRANSVERSE REINFORCEMENT OF COLUMNS CONSIDERABLY STRENGTHENED BY USING SMALL SPACING OF TIES.
