ANALYSIS OF VARIOUS TYPES OF BRIDGES BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD

WHILE GENERAL PROGRAMS UTILIZING FINITE ELEMENTS ARE CAPABLE OF SOLVING THE ELASTIC PROBLEM IN ANY CONFIGURATION, MUCH ATTENTION HAS RECENTLY BEEN GIVEN TO IMPROVING THE ECONOMY OF SOLUTION. THE TYPE OF IDEALIZATION NECESSARY FOR THE SOLUTION AND THE ELEMENTS USED TO ACHIEVE, ECONOMICALLY, A SUFFICIENT ENGINEERING ACCURACY ARE STUDIED IN THIS PAPER. IT IS CONVENIENT TO CLASSIFY THE TYPES OF BRIDGES AS: (A) SLABS (BOTH THICK AND THIN) AND GRILLAGES, (B) SLABS WITH ECCENTRIC BEAMS, (C) SHALLOW CELLULAR STRUCTURES, AND (D) DEEP BOX STRUCTURES. ONLY ELASTIC ANALYSIS WITH A SMALL DEFORMATION IS CONSIDERED, AND PROBLEMS OF ELASTIC INSTABILITY ARE EXCLUDED. SUCH PROBLEMS, ASSOCIATED WITH VERY THIN WALLED STEEL STRUCTURES, POSE PROBLEMS OF THEIR OWN BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THIS REVIEW. A NUMBER OF EXAMPLES ARE GIVEN. /AUTHOR/
