AN UPDATE TO CORRECT: COST/BENEFIT OPTIMIZATION FOR THE REDUCTION OF ROADWAY ENVIRONMENT CAUSED TRAGEDIES

This article describes the CORRECT (Cost/Benefit Optimization for the Reduction of Roadway Environment Caused Tragedies) system which has been used by the Alabama Highway Department Accident Identification and Surveillance Section for over 15 years. In 1988, the system was enhanced by replacing the dynamic programming algorithm of optimization by a branch-and-bound algorithm which is easier to use. The optimization method offers more return on the traffic safety investment. The results are presented of an implementation in which the optimal policy was compared to the maximum benefit-to-cost ratio first, and it is shown how the branch-and-bound optimization routines quickly generate optimal solutions for all budgets over a user specified range.
