The future development of Swiss rail infrastructure - ZEB

The ZEB (Rail Infrastructure Development Plan) represents a second phase in the development of the Swiss railway infrastructure which takes accountof the predicted changes in traffic flow up to 2030. It is estimated that there will be an increase of between 60 and 100 per cent in passenger numbers. The main aims of the plan are listed and include improved serviceson east-west and north-south routes, optimisation of capacity on approaches to transalpine routes, better connections for passengers, improved capacity for freight and a continued move from road to rail. The roles of theSBB, federal government and cantons in the plan are discussed. Funding issues and the timetable for improvements are considered. Particular attention is paid to the role of the ZEB in reducing Switzerland's carbon dioxide emissions. Brief details are given of the 'Sustainability Indicators for Rail Infrastructure Projects' process developed by the Federal Office of Transport. Estimates are provided of anticipated cost savings and reductions in tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions. With demand already outstripping supply, further plans already underway for additional network expansion are noted.
