Public Transit: Looking Back and Moving Forward. A Legislative History of Public Transportation in the United States and Analysis of Major Issues for the Authorization of the Surface Transportation Bill
This article provides an overview of the legislation that led to the development of public transit and related infrastructure in the United States. At the start of the 1950s, the majority of the nation's transit systems were privately owned and operated and on the brink of fiscal and physical collapse. However, the Housing Act of 1961 was the first federal legislation to address public transit, and was followed by the Urban Mass Transportation Acts of 1964 and 1966, respectively. The components of these and other, later public transit legislation are discussed in some detail.
