Importance of Common Data Specs
This article explores the importance of a common data specification for making ridesharing a more viable option for today’s commuters. The author compares this issue to the changes that have occurred in other segments of the travel industry, i.e., finding airfares and airline connections is now easier for the traveler who uses online travel database services. Public agencies and private providers all have their own databases of rideshare participants, but these have developed independently of each other so their data is not likely to be compatible. The author describes the work of Carl Gorringe, an independent consultant working with the San Francisco Bay Area’s 511 travel information service. In the transit industry, Google’s Transit Feed Specifications (GTFS) has become the unofficial industry standard for coding transit data, but it provides primarily static data. Data for ridesharing needs to be more dynamic to support the real time changes of this transportation mode. The article concludes by briefly outlining some of the changes in data specifications that would support ridesharing as one component of a multimodal approach to transportation.
