Transit Industry Invests in Innovative Ways to Go Green

Despite the grim economic climate, transportation projects and vehicle purchases considered “green” are getting a green light via the federal government’s economic stimulus initiatives, according to this article. With a new administration, grants through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER), are funding alternative fuel vehicles, and there is more focus on alternative energy systems, according to a vice president and director of Parsons Brinckerhoff. Examples of these changes include Wenatchee, Washington’s LINK Transit’s purchase with a TIGGER grant of five battery-powered electric vehicles to replace the diesel trolley fleet. The Phoenix Public Transit Department has received an ARRA grant to refurbish its Central Station facility in downtown Phoenix and to bring some environmentally sustainable features into the site. Other examples include VTA in San Jose, which brought in a heard of sheep and goats to maintain transit facility lawns.
