Laboratory compaction of asphalt samples using the shear box compactor

The accurate laboratory measurement of the performance characteristics of asphalt materials, stiffness, fatigue and deformation resistance, is dependent on the condition of the laboratory sample. It follows logically that if the laboratory sample does not replicate the material in the field the measured performance characteristics are dubious. The RILEM Task Group 2 was established to research the various methods of sample manufacture using sophisticated analysis tools. The Technical University Delft (TUD) and Pioneer Road Services participated in the TG2 study using PReSBOX, the shear box compactor at TUD, and this paper summarises the outcomes. The TG2 will in time provide comparisons with other compaction devices. This paper will provide a brief introduction to the shear box compactor PReSBOX, introduce RILEM and provide details of the TG2 project. Finally the TUD study will be summarised and conclusions drawn. (a) For the covering record of the conference, please refer to ITRD no. E218387.
