Guide to road design part 6B: roadside environment

The Guide to Road Design – Part 6B: Roadside Environment provides guidance for road designers and other practitioners on the types of features and facilities that may need to be accommodated within a roadside. Effective design of roadside areas requires a coordinated approach that simultaneously supports the functional requirements of the road and enhances the roadside environment, rather than simply minimising environmental impacts. Part 6B describes and discusses design objectives, principles and considerations for a diverse range of roadside functions, features and facilities relating to environmental aspects, roadside amenity and roadside infrastructure. The need to meet ecologically sustainable development principles in relation to stormwater run-off and fauna management is emphasised and guidelines are provided for fauna crossings and noise control. The importance of integrated planning and design of roadways in harmony with urban and regional design objectives in order to create a visually pleasing experience for road users is discussed and general guidance on landscaping and vegetation management is provided. Part 6B also provides guidelines on the provision and design of roadside infrastructure that is necessary to support safe, efficient and convenient travel by road users. Infrastructure such as rest facilities, road furniture (i.e. signs and delineation), fences, road lighting, emergency/help telephones and off-street parking are covered as well as the accommodation of utilities in the road reserve.
