Development of intelligent speed advisory system
This paper describes how to help prevent accidents at residential areas, especially those involving children at school zones, by using a car navigation system. First, through the study of actual condition of traffic near school zones, it was shown not only that the through traffic is very heavy, but also that many vehicles are exceeding the speed limit in these areas. Next, based on the questionnaire by elementary school students, the actual actions made by the students at Hiyari-Hatto locations in school zones were observed and it is pointed out that there is a big gap between the student's awareness toward danger and the actual actions they make. Consequently, to solve this problem, an intelligent speed advisory (ISA) system was developed which stimulates drivers to drive safely by warning them via navigation system. A field operation test for this system has been launched. For the covering abstract see ITRD E140665.
