Motion Sensors for Scour Monitoring: Laboratory Experiments and Numerical Simulations
Bridge scour monitoring using fixed instrumentation is a good way for the owner to be warned of imminent failure and take appropriate action before exposing the public to undue risk. This paper shows an easy way to predict imminent failure of bridges by installing a motion sensor on the bridge. Two laboratory experiments are described in the paper, and a relationship between the natural frequency of the bridge and the scour depth is presented. Numerical models for the two experiments are established and analyzed. Both the lab data analysis and numerical simulation show that the natural frequency of the simulated bridge-foundation system changes with time. Therefore motion sensor can be used for scour monitoring.
