Exploring the Relation of Personal Characteristics with Car Drivers’ Preferences for Alternative-Fuel Vehicles
This paper explores the relations of personal characteristics with car drivers’ preferences for alternative fueled vehicles (electric-gasoline hybrids, biofuel, and hydrogen). To that effect, a stated choice experiment was conducted, in which respondents were requested to choose among hypothetical alternative fueled vehicles and a regular fueled base car. An MNL model was estimated from these observations including main effects for the nine alternative fueled vehicle attributes and their interactions with a range of objective and subjective personal characteristics. The results indicate that especially age is related to attribute preferences, while no relations were found for educational level and income. Furthermore, of the subjective characteristics perceptions of alternative fuels in particular were related to alternative fuel preferences, which provide starting points for influencing preferences. Implications of the results for future research are discussed.
