GPS film antenna - circular polarized antenna consisting of linear conductors configured on the same plane

A new circular polarized antenna consisting solely of the configuration of linear conductors that can be placed on a plane surface was developed. The new GPS film antenna has already been introduced into the market with the feature that it can be stuck on the inside of a windshield. It offers the following two advantages: it has a simpler structure than the conventional 3-dimensional patch antenna; and it does not impair the aesthetic appearance of vehicles. These two advantages flow from the antenna's simple structure, consisting of printed linear patterns on a single-side transparent resin film. The structure has opened up a new world of possibilities forcircular polarized antennas, offering a wide variety of applications for vehicular use, including ITS-related products. This paper first discusses basic principles used for this antenna to receive circular polarized waves. Then, it describes some special features and performances of GPS film antenna, while providing other applications based on the principles. For thecovering abstract see ITRD E140665.
