San Mateo County Alternate Route Plan and Smart Corridors
The San Mateo City/County Association of Governments (C/CAG) has embarked on a unique and proactive Incident Management Program that will develop and deploy ITS elements along a parallel corridor to create a Smart Corridor that will enable local public works agencies to manage incident traffic that is diverted onto local streets. The Alternate Routes will include dynamic route guidance signs, video surveillance cameras, traffic signal flush plans, arterial travel times, transit priority, and integration with Caltrans and California Highway Patrol (CHP) operations to reduce the impacts of congestion on local operations and freeway queuing. This paper presents the successful steps taken that have strongly positioned the San Mateo C/CAG to deploy an effective incident management strategy including an Alternate Route Plan, Infrastructure Improvement Plan, Smart Corridors Concept of Operations, and funding appropriations.
