ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS FOR INTERCITY HIGH SPEED GROUND TRANSPORT SYSTEMS

THIS PAPER DEALS WITH THE FOLLOWING PREREQUISITE OF SUCCESS OF A TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM: ITS ABILITY TO GIVE ECONOMIC SATISFATION TO BOTH ITS OPERATORS AND ITS USERS. SPECIFICALLY, IT ATTEMPTS TO DEFINE THE DEMAND CHARACTERISTICS WHICH THE PUBLIC SEEMS TO DESIRE IN INTERCITY TRANSPORTATION AS WELL AS THE COMPETITIVE COST ENVIRONMENT. IN THIS DISCUSSION INTERCITY REFERS TO ROUTES WITH TERMINAL-TO TERMINAL DISTANCES OF APPROXIMATELY 200-500 MILES. THE TWO PREDOMINANT MODES IN INTERCITY TRAVEL TODAY ARE THE AUTOMOBILE AND THE JET PLANE. IT IS THE AIM OF THIS PAPER TO ILLUMINATE CERTAIN ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS THAT WILL AFFECT THE PLANNERS AND BUILDERS OF A HIGH SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM: THE EXTENT TO WHICH THESE CONSIDERATIONS CAN BE RECOGNIZED IN THE DESIGN OF A HIGH SPEED GROUND TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM WILL UNDOUBTEDLY HAVE GREAT BEARING ON THE SUCCESS OF THE VENTURE. /AUTHOR/
