Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee Corridor - Gateway System Transition: Planning To Execution

This paper describes the Gary-Chicago-Milwaukee (GCM) Corridor’s Gateway Traveler Information System and www.gcmtravel.com web site, as it moved to its new home, the Illinois Department of Transportation’s (IDOT’s) ITS Program Office. In 2007, IDOT completed a transition of Gateway hardware, software, communications and operations to IDOT’s Traffic Systems Center (TSC) in Oak Park, Illinois. The authors outline the carefully designed and executed plan that addressed all partner agencies, third party traffic information service providers, and a variety of IDOT departments, while supporting the traveling public reliance on www.gcmtravel.com for traveler information. The Gateway system allows sharing of real-time performance information for the GCM Corridor transportation network including travel times, congestion, construction, incidents, camera images, and special events with IDOT Regions/Districts. This information is also shared with external operating agencies including transit, public safety, emergency response agencies, academia, research organizations, public and private information service providers including the media, and the public.
