Fast Forward Means Fast Relief
This paper describes the Governor’s Fast Forward Initiative, an aggressive program that compresses the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) 20 year transportation improvement program to 8 years. The purpose of this program is to quickly implement capacity and operational improvements to address the burden of congestion on Georgia’s transportation network. Traffic congestion can hinder economic growth due to the cost of moving people and goods, as well as by increasing delays and fuel consumption. Traffic congestion also contributes to adverse air quality issues and quality of life for the work force. The authors describe three efforts supported by this Initiative: the Advanced Transportation Controller Deployment program, an ongoing effort to upgrade the traffic control hardware in the state; the Metro Signal Timing program, a new program aimed to address the deficiencies in traffic signal operation across all jurisdictional boundaries; and the ITS (Intelligent Transportation System) program, which was expanded to introduce over 150 new ramp meters along urban freeways in the Atlanta (Georgia) area. They stress that each of these programs have incremental benefits associated with them, but by coordinating the support of these programs, the combined result will have a significant impact on managing congestion on the metro Atlanta transportation network.
