Well-to-Wheels Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Analysis of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

A well to wheels analysis evaluates a particular vehicle technology, from the primary source of energy to the operation of the vehicle. This is one way to assess the emissions and energy implications of advanced vehicle technology and/or alternative fuel use. This paper describes a well to wheels energy utilization and greenhouse gas emissions analysis of plug in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV). It looks at the implications of the PHEV's fuel source, powertrain technology, all-electric range (AER) rating, and upstream marginal electricity generation mix.
