Ancient Shipwreck Survey and the Modern Submarine Landscape Off Yalikavak, Turkey

For those searching for shipwrecks from antiquity, a prime location has long been considered the Aegean Sea. In 2008, surveys were conducted by an expedition off Turkey's southwestern coast in coastal waters deeper than 50 m. The authors documented the modern landscape's condition, including heavy damage by trawling operations to the seabed and submarine features, in addition to locating four ancient shipwrecks. A region is delineated by a navigational boundary for this area's charge within which large vessels are prohibited from operating. Outside of this zone, very few targets were found by sonar. Potential areas where ancient sites may once have been have been masked by the modern impacts on the submarine landscape. Regional trawling activity has resulted in scarred seafloor condition in large Aegean Sea areas. Areas in which wrecks may still be preserved today may be helped to be targeted through studies of modern coastal area activities.
