Runway Incursions: An Industry Examination of FAA Initiatives and Objectives

A 2007 evaluation of the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA's) "Runway Safety Blueprint 2002-2004" is discussed, with comparison given to a 1994 study. Goals of "Runway Safety Blueprint 2002-2004" included: implementing site-specific runway safety solutions coordinated with local aviation communities; supporting and employing new technologies to reduce the potential for collisions; increasing situational awareness on airport surfaces; identifying and implementing enhancements for improved surface communications; improving runway safety data collection, analysis, and dissemination; assessing and modifying procedures for enhanced runway safety; increasing surface safety awareness throughout the aviation community; and developing and distributing safety education and training materials to controllers, pilots, and all other airport users. Participants in the "Runway Safety Blueprint 2002-2004" included some of the various aviation trade associations within the U.S. aviation industry, major U.S. domestic airlines, and some of the largest U.S. airports.
