Science friction - the science and art of avoiding skidding

This paper considers the science of friction generation and the art of applying it to the real world. It is through this application (using models and experimentation) that it becomes possible to optimise the characteristics of road surfaces to increase their contribution to friction with the aim of avoiding skidding. The factors affecting friction such as road surface texture, macro- and microtexture, speed, the weather and wear from passing traffic are described. Skidding resistance standards for the UK are outlined including investigatory levels of skidding resistance and recommended polished stone values for aggregates in road surfaces.
