Traffic and Telephones: A Literature Review of Studies on Mobile Phone Use and Driving
Recent studies on mobile phone use while driving are reviewed in the present project. In particular, the following research areas are considered: (a) extent of mobile phone use among drivers; (b) effect of mobile phone use on driving behavior and attention; (c) mobile phone use and accident risk; (d) mobile phone use versus other types of distraction; and (e) effect of different types of mobile phones. The literature review suggests that more research is needed on accident risk and mobile phone use, particularly related to different types of mobile phones. Importantly, this will contribute to the ongoing discussion regarding the distraction mechanisms at work when taking in mobile phones while driving.
