Making electrification work

The benefts of electrification are increased network capacity, lower rolling stock maintenance costs, and reduced environmental impact; conversely, there are costs to signalling systems, infrastructure maintenance and climate-related reliability issues. It is recommended that development of the existing systems will provide capacity benefits. Current works are described: upgrading power supplies on AC-lines; boosting power supply equipment on DC lines; upgrading monitoring systems; new initiatives for equipment design; and ensuring compatibility of AC-lines with regenerative braking. Rail routes identified for electrification by Network Rail under the Route Utilisation Strategy (RUS) are described. Third rail infill candidate-routes are also discussed. Affordable design and minimal disruption are key factors informing Network Rail's electrification strategy.
