This paper presents a brief history of the development of traffic flow theory, beginning with Bruce D. Greenshields, including how he performed his measurements of traffic flow and his findings concerning the relationship between speed and traffic density. It concludes with comments on the influence of Greenshields on traffic engineers and researchers around the world.
