Mechanical properties of porous asphalt, recommendations for standardization

In this research project various mechanical tests were chosen in order to compare their predictability of the in situ performance of porous asphalt. This led to the choice of the following tests: Laboratory aging, compaction, evaluation of the void content, permeability, particle loss, indirect tensile test, water sensitivity, stiffness and direct tension. At the same time a survey was conducted to collect information about the in situ experience of Swiss local authorities with porous asphalt. Based on the results of the survey sites were identified in cantons Aargau, Vaud and Valais and samples were cored for further laboratory tests. The results in this research program indicate that in most cases standard EN recommended laboratory tests corroborated field performances. It was shown that polymer modified binders improve the performance of PA.
