Tsugaru Strait Bridge and Nagisa Bridge: Combining a Suspension and Cable Stayed Bridge and a Steel and Prestressed Concrete Bridge
The Tsugaru Strait between Honshu and Hokkaido, Japan, is designated as an international waterway on the direct route from China and Korea to the west coast of the United States. The Strait is a very important channel in world commerce, connecting China, Korea, Siberia, North and South America, and also Europe (through the Panama Canal). Furthermore, it is a crossing point for north-south traffic to Hokkaido and transverse navigation along the Strait. This paper describes the design and proposed construction of the Tsugaru Strait and Nagisa Bridges, a combination cable-stayed and steel prestressed concrete bridge project that will traverse the Strait, aiding the economic development of the region.
