Marginal Aggregates in Flexible Pavements: Field Evaluation

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utilization of substandard or marginal aggregates in flexible pavement construction of airport pavements. This investigation was undertaken to evaluate the effects of using lower quality aggregates such as rounded uncrushed gravels and sands on the rutting of flexible pavements. The scope of this research study included a review of available literature and existing data (Phase I), a laboratory evaluation organized to determine the effects of marginal aggregates and potential techniques to upgrade these substandards materials (Phase II), and a field evaluation involving test sections utilizing the most promising techniques (Phase III). This report summarizes the field evaluation (Phase III) that was conducted to determine the effects of aggregate properties on rutting potential of marginal aggregate asphalt mixtures under actual aircraft loads.
