An easier ride for asphalt industry

This article outlines changes in standards for the UK asphalt market. British Standards BS 4987-1 and 594-1 are to be withdrawn from 1 January 2008 and replaced by a new European Standard BS EN 13108. European Standards are intended to give a conformity of product across the European Union (EU) countries. A UK guidance document, PD 6691, has been published. Asphalt testing will also be harmonised by wide-ranging European standards. The main change will occur in product descriptions. "Macadam" will now be described as "asphalt concrete". Binder penetration will have a grade designation rather than a single pen number. The standard is split into seven parts covering the different types of asphalt used in the EU. A new British standard, BS 594987, replaces 594-2 and 4987-2 for transportation, laying and compaction of asphalt, with a broader scope. A new European standard, EN 13108-8, looks at the specification and description of reclaimed asphalt. Recycling in this area is more advanced in many other European countries than in the UK. The new asphalt specifications require a declaration of conformity on type testing and factory production control.
