Bisek - a research initiative on social and economic aspects of the automobile

In the spring 2005 the Norwegian and Swedish Road Administrations and Vinnova (the Swedish Agency for Innovation Systems) together with a number of Swedish motorists' organisations, Bil Sweden, MRF and the Swedish insurance company Folksam initiated a five year research program addressing specifically the social and economic aspects of the automobile. The financing allocated by the parties at present amounts to 14 million SEK but the intention is to somewhat increase the total amount through co-financing arrangements. The paper explains the directions of the intended research, the ways by which research results will be presented and communicated. The research financing initiative Bisek is particularly focused on how the social conditions of households, elderly, children, and young people in cities and in rural areas, are affected by the economic conditions of owning and driving a car. Additionally, the social and economic impacts of new automobile technology will be addressed in the research financed by Bisek. The paper also gives a brief account of the establishing and organising of Bisek as well as initial research financed by Bisek (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E212343.
