AN ANALYSIS OF PETROLEUM HYDROCARBONS IN THE MARINE ENVIRONMENT: RESULTS OF AN INTERLABORATORY COMPARISON EXERCISE

In an interlaboratory exercise, Exxon Research and Engineering and the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) collected water samples from 2 stations in the New York Bay area by individual sampling techniques and determined hydrocarbon content by separate analytical procedures. NBS collectd the water by a drop sampler, separated the hydrocarbons by a dynamic headspace procedure, and quantified hydrocarbon content by GC; Exxon sampled using a stainless steel bucket, extracted the hydrocarbons with carbon tetrachloride, and identified the hydrocarbon content by IR with supplemental GC-MS.
