Compatibility and frontal impact test procedures - additional work to support VC-COMPAT - final report

Following the introduction of seat belts, the European Frontal and Side Impact Directives and EuroNCAP, improved vehicle compatibility is considered to offer the next greatest potential benefit for improving vehicle occupant safety and reducing road accident casualties. The VC-Compat project isa European Commission 5th framework project. Its main objectives are to develop a suite of test procedures to assess and control vehicle compatibility in frontal collisions. Due to the large amount of work required and the limited amount of funding available for VC-Compat, it was deemed necessary to perform additional work outside VC-Compat to support the detailed development of the proposed test procedures to ensure that the project objectives would be met. To provide support to the VC-Compat project and to address other related issues, the UK Department for Transport (DfT) initiatedthis project in 2003. The work performed included the development of the full width deformable barrier (FWDB) test, dissemination of the UK compatibility research and a partial Regulatory Impact Assessment (RIA) which is described in a separate document reference number RIA/SE/840/03.
