Design and construction of closed cell expanded polystyrene foam embankment with a heavy duty pavement
Closed cell expanded polystyrene foam (EPS) was used for construction of embankments in sections of the Port of Brisbane Motorway, Brisbane, Queensland, particularly close to bridge abutments. There have been limited numbers of projects utilising this material in Australia. This paper discusses the basis for selection of EPS as the embankment fill material, the design principles for the embankments and construction issues, and the design and construction of heavy duty pavements over the EPS, where the pavement surface was as low as 0.9m over the top of the foam.
