Personal repertoire of travel models. Mover groups in Finnish cities

Liikkujaryhmat suomalaisissa kaupungeissa

This research concerns the variety of the way people use different travel modes in four Finnish cities. Five mover groups were defined based on what travel mode or a combination of travel modes respondents usually used and how committed they were to using it. The groups were heavy car users, car users, regular customers of public transport, people who prefer walking or cycling, and people who mix all modes. The mover group shares varied significantly between the cities. The share of regular customers of public transport and people who mix all modes was clearly influenced by the level of service of public transport. The share of heavy car users appers to be relatively constant, but within each city there were significant differences between different parts of the city. As expected, car owership has a major impact on travel mode repertoires. Of those who have access to a car, approximately 70 % are car users or heavy car users. Respectively, of those who don't have access to a car, 70 % are regular customers of public transport or prefer walking or cycling. People who mix all modes was the only group to witch belongs a significant share (20 %) of people regardless of access to a car. The study shows that in all cities and in all trip groups people use various travel modes and are generally not committed to a single one. It is quite realistic to strive for a situation where significant share of people that have access to a car would still also use public transport and walk or ride a bicycle. Together the sustainable travel modes can achieve a level of service that can best compete with the private car. This will support both a carless lifestyle and sustainable use of a private car.
