A Practical Modeling Approach for Evaluation of Fuel Efficiency for Road Traffic

The primary objective of this research is to develop a practical model for determining the level of fuel consumption for a traffic network, and evaluating the effects of transportation planning, management, and operations on the fuel efficiency. The relationships between the real-world driving activities, the vehicle specific power (VSP), and the corresponding fuel consumptions are analyzed based on the data of 26 gasoline and LPG-fueled light duty vehicles. Then, an indicator for evaluating the level of fuel consumption is designed by dividing the normalized fuel consumption by the fuel use in the most economic scenario. A model is developed following the design of the indicator that features minimal input requirements and meaningful output. In the case studies, the proposed model is applied to estimating and comparing the fuel consumption levels for several standard driving cycles and the specific cycles for the cities of Houston and Beijing as well, and evaluating the fuel efficiency improvement resulted from the electronic toll collection (ETC) system. Finally, the merits of the proposed model are discussed, and the limitations and recommendations are provided for further model improvement.
